THE BANGLADESHI SHIP BUILDING INDUSTRY IS ON ITS WAY

On Tuesday 25 February 2008 Bangladesh’s shipbuilding company Western Marine Shipyard Limited had a keel-laying ceremony of two Ice Class Ocean-going ships to be exported to Denmark.
The ceremony began symbolically the construction work of the ship by hitting the hammer on iron-plate of the proposed structure of the ships. -Western Marine is a pioneering company in shipbuilding, the first Bangladeshi company in the sector which has received orders for exporting ocean-going big ships for foreign parties from Denmark, Holland, Germany and Singapore.
Recently at least two Danish shipping interests have placed substantial orders with Bangladeshi shipyards. The first order was placed with Ananda Shipyard in Meghna Ghat, where a multi-purpose vessel (2,900 DWT) is currently under construction and is scheduled for delivery very soon in 2008. The second order landed at the Western Marine in Chittagong where the keel-ceremony was taking place. The signing of the contract is for building of 5 multipurpose vessels (4,100 DWT) scheduled to be delivered to a Danish ship consortium.
The Danish Ambassador Mr. Einar H. Jensen, was present as special guest at a keel-laying ceremony of the two ships in Chittagong. The Ambassador mentioned that if the ships are able to live up to the requirements and to be delivered on time, it will be essential that a mechanism can be introduced for facilitating an easy clearance of fittings and components when imported. A “Green Channel”, like in the textile industry, could be a possibility for providing the necessary flexibility for the involved parties.
Ananda Shipyard and Western Marine are breaking new grounds in Bangladesh in their endeavours to succeed in these projects. The obtained orders will be important and instrumental in bringing Bangladesh into the market as a serious player for building ships for the international shipping market.
If the above mentioned projects will prove successful, the positive spin-off could be big for the ship building industry in Bangladesh and open a passage for Bangladeshi competition against shipbuilding nations as Vietnam and China. Embassy of Denmark, Dhaka
