Thousands of protesters under the banner of different political and Islamist organisations in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country staged rallies and processions Friday urging the international community to take initiatives to force Israel to stop the invasion of Gaza.
Terming Israel a criminal state and a threat to global peace, the protesters denounced the role of United Nations (UN) and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) on the issue of Gaza, and criticised USA for supporting Israel.
The Dhaka protesters paraded through city streets chanting slogans against Israel on the 11th day of the bloody confrontation and the start of Israeli ground offensive in Gaza on Friday.
In the capital, immediately after Jumma prayers, Dhaka city units of Islami Oikya Andolon, Sammilita Ulama Mashayekh Parishad, Bangladesh Khelafat Andolon, Hefazat-e-Islam and Jamiyate Ulamaye Islam Bangladesh brought out processions, amid tight security, from the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
The protesters shouted slogans supporting the boycott of Israeli goods, urging Israel to stop killings of unarmed Palestinian people and calling on the Muslim Ummah to be united in fighting Israel.
They carried placards and festoons reading ‘Save the children in Gaza’, ‘Stop genocide in Palestine’, ‘End seige on Gaza, free Palestine’, ‘Hands off Israel’, ‘Why Palestine burning – answer Jews, answer UN, answer USA.’
The processions ended peacefully in front of the Baitul Mukarram after parading city roads from Purana Paltan to Dainik Bangla intersection.
A group of the protesters also burnt the national flag of Israel near the mosque.
The Islami Shashantantra Andolon Bangladesh (ISAB) and its student and labour wings also brought out a procession from near Baitul Mukarram and met at a short meeting at the same place after parading through the main thoroughfares.
Addressing the meeting as chief guest, ISAB amir Syed Rezaul Karim criticised the leaders of KSA and the UN for their ineffectiveness over the Gaza issue and urged the government to adopt s resolution in Jatiya Sangsad censuring Israel.
ISAB presidium member Syed Mosaddeq Billah Al-Madani and Dhaka city ISAB amir ATM Hemayet Uddin also spoke at the meeting.
Global Solidarity with Gaza held a protest rally in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh, urging immediate halt of Israel’s barbaric attacks on Palestinian people in Gaza.
Communist Party of Bangladesh president Mujahidul Islam Selim, Shahbagh movement leader Emran H Sarker, Akramul Haque and Khan Asaduzzaman Masum, took part in the rally.
Bangladesh Juba Union, Chhara Union, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front and Udichi Shilpi Gosthi also held separate protest rallies at the same venue.
Bhashani Anusari Parishad also held a protest rally at Shahbagh where the executive chairman of the organisation and Jahangirnagar University’s former vice-chancellor Jasim Uddin Ahmed, Gonoshasthaya Kendra trustee Zafrullah Chowdhury and general secretary of the organisation Sheikh Rafiqul Islam spoke.
Seven lawmakers of Workers Party of Bangladesh, an ally of the Awami-led alliance, on Friday in a press statement asked president Abdul Hamid to convene a special session of parliament to condemn the Israeli attacks.
The signatories include civil aviation and tourism minister Rashed Khan Menon, Fazle Hossain Badsha, Sheikh Hafizur Rahman, Mustafa Lutfullah, Hazera Sultana, Yeasin Ali and Tipu Sultan.
The Dhaka city unit of National Awami Party Bangladesh formed a human chain in front of the National Press Club in the city protesting the attack and alleged that Israel cannot endure Muslims as they are ‘ultra-communalists’.
In Sylhet, different organizations, including the city unit of Khelafat Majlish, Imam Samity and Amra Sachetan Sylhetbashi formed separate human chains and brought out separate processions in the city protesting the attack.
In Netrokona, the district unit of Bangladesh Students’ Union, the student wing of Communist Party of Bangladesh, formed a human chain in front of the district central Shaheed Minar condemning the attack on Gaza.
In Gazipur, Tongi thana unit of Hefazat-e-Islam held a rally at Ershad Nagar of Tongi and brought out a procession protesting the attack on Gaza and urged to the Muslim ummah to united and stand by the side of affected people in Palestine.
Similar protests were also held in Chittagong, Barisal and Narayanganj cities and in the district towns of Sirajganj and Gaibandha.
